Hillary Clinton has been making quite a stink over the Florida and Michigan primaries, for which she has made some weak and illogical arguments. However, there’s one often-neglected element to this puzzle that solves it for me instantly.
In September of last year, Mrs. Clinton signed a pledge along with fellow Democrats that they would not campaign in those states. Then, as soon as it was to her advantage, she broke her word, remaining on the ballot as a candidate (and thus, having a campaign). Obama and Edwards stuck with their democratically decided party rules and their word of honor. Hillary has not—proving not only that she doesn’t care about the rule of law, but that her words and oaths mean nothing as well.
So what’s the magic solution? The obvious one: Follow the rules! Both remaining candidates pledged that those states didn’t count and that they would “adhere to the DNC approved nominating calendar” (quote from her Web site). And then—treachery! Chairman Dean, enforce that pledge! Those states knew exactly what the consequences were; if their citizens are angry, it should be focused upon their local leaders who betrayed the basic principles of being a unified party. If they want their votes to count, suck up the cost and vote legitimately—with more than one serious candidate on the ballot.
One real candidate on the ballot? And she wants it to count? Only a dictator could appreciate such a victory.
