The Mumpower metamorphasis

Like Al Gore before he found global warming, Carl Mumpower has struggled to develop a signature public persona. Remember the time when he was Asheville’s crime-fighting drug czar? Or his short-lived attempt to become its number-one patron of the arts? Or the voice of reason and moderation he once offered to City Council, before he decided to say no to everything?

Failing to find his metier in Council, he then ran for congressional nomination and handily won the Republican primary. But after launching his general-election campaign for Congress against the incumbent, he suddenly received a calling to purify the conservative ideology of his own party. Thus the spectacle of its local leaders submitting to his demand that they endorse each detail of his version of True Republicanism.

And thus we have seen the latest transition of Mumpower—from politician to evangelist. If his congressional campaign is ultimately unsuccessful, the next logical destination for the good doctor is obvious: divinity school.

at least Mumpower is standing up for Constitutional principles. the same can hardly be said for barely anyone in local, state, and Federal government!

no, he’s not perfect, but who is? it seems that most “progressives” in this town are happy with freakin’ Socialism, while most Neo-Cons are happy with Fascism.

    NEWSFLASH: LIBERTY IS THE ANSWER!

  2. Bernard-

Can you define, specifically, what you mean by Liberty?

In addition, can you give examples of Socialism and Fascism in Asheville?

    Thanks!

Dr Carl Mumpower stands for important Southern values. Self-reliance, hard work, family values, patriotism, law and order. Go Carl Go! My vote is going to you to represent WNC in congress.

“Self-reliance, hard work, family values, patriotism, law and order.” Could also be described as “too dumb to get food stamps, no education for better job, hates gays, fascism.” hmmmm

    sure, “posnideus”…

LIBERTY – freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control. (one definition)

my comment regarding Socialism & Fascism was really intended to be meant for all levels of government, not merely at the local level.

basically, any authoritarian leanings to the right or left can be attributed to either Socialism or Fascism, as one is left wing and the other right wing. either way, it’s oppression of a people, otherwise thought and said to be “free”.

one local example i can think of would be the over regulatory UDO, and other government interventions which usurp our property rights, both of which seem to have been perpetrated by both sides of the left-right single dimensional political axis.

ironically, most folks in Asheville who criticize Mumpower focus on his “Drug War” stance. the kicker is that his stance is to get the Federal Government OUT of the equation and allow States & Counties legislate drugs!

“ironically, most folks in Asheville who criticize Mumpower focus on his “Drug War” stance. the kicker is that his stance is to get the Federal Government OUT of the equation and allow States & Counties legislate drugs!”

Really? Any proof on that? I have never heard him mention anything about letting the states decide about drug issues.

PROOF? why not ask him how he stands on the issue? better than typical local gossip about it, eh? 8-)

heck, even years ago when i debated Mumpower on these Xpress boards over the ‘drug issue’, he was already stating that the Federal Drug War was NOT working, and that people should not be in criminal courts, but rather drug courts. even then his feelings were starting to change.

also, Ron Paul’s book, “The Revolution – A Manifesto” seems to have made quite an impression on Mumpower.

i believe we need to encourage those who are in the political arena when they begin to warm up to liberty.
