Dear readers:

Mountain Xpress Contributing Editor Rebecca Bowe covers “The Green Scene”—and much more—for our newspaper. Her reporting on environmental matters has become a mainstay of Xpress’ local journalism—and two prestigious groups have taken note of her work.

At a July 19 ceremony in Atlanta, the Society of Professional Journalists issued its annual Green Eyeshade Awards, which recognize the best reporting in 11 Southern states. Bowe’s landmark exposé on ground-water contamination around the former CTS of Asheville site—(see “Fail-Safe?” July 11, 2007, Xpress]—caught the judges’ attention, and they awarded her second place for best investigative reporting by a nondaily newspaper journalist for the article. (Earlier this year, the North Carolina Press Association gave Bowe an investigative-reporting award for the same story).

And that’s not all: We recently received word that the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism at Michigan State University has granted Bowe a fellowship for a special reporting project: In August, she’ll travel with other award recipients to Alaska, where she’ll report on the American frontier of climate change.
