At its Tuesday, Aug. 26, meeting, Asheville City Council faces a jam-packed agenda with items ranging from the mundane to the much-debated, including two matters likely to capture special attention: a request to facilitate Parkside’s construction and preliminary plans for a performing-arts center just off City/County Plaza.
On the Parkside front, Council members will weigh a request from developer Stewart Coleman to approve a construction easement for a road that would help his proposed condominium construction go forward. City staff offer this recommendation: “Since the proposed road minimally complies with (one of) the approved masterplans and other technical standards required for the extension of public infrastructure, it potentially conflicts with park use. Staff recommends that the Council carefully consider the pros and cons along with other citizen and stakeholder concerns in deciding whether such easement should be granted and/or conditioned to mitigate any potential concerns.”
Council will also get a close look at a brewing effort to construct a state-of-the-art performance venue on land just south of the Parkside property.
Before it confronts those major developments, Council will review a slew of resolutions and budget amendments. Later, it will hear about proposed tweaks to problematic passages in the United Development Ordinance.
The meeting begins at 5 p.m. on the second floor of City Asheville. Click here to read the full agenda and supporting documents.
