Now in its 13th year, the Toe River Storytelling Festival has been enthralling audiences (if you’ve ever listened to a good storyteller spin a yarn, you’ll know that enthralled is exactly what I mean) and providing a platform for tellers of tall tales. The event takes place on the banks of the Toe River, at Riverside Park in Spruce Pine.
Says a press release, “In this 13th year, the storytellers are outstanding and consist of:
• David Holt (musician, folklorist)
• Michael Reno Harrell (singer/ songwriter and storyteller)
• Kim Weitkamp (humorist, storyteller)
• Fred Park (humorist, dancemaster, storyteller)
• Linda Spitzer (self-described “storyqueen”)
and a special ending of the day with the story of Lesley Riddle, performed by musicians and storytellers from Yancey County.”
The festival takes place on Saturday, July 17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. $10 adults/free for children under 9. Food will be available for purchase. Parking for both events will be available at Pinebridge Complex with shuttles available by Mitchell County Transportation vans. Info: 765-3008 or sprucepinefestivals.com.
But Wait! There’s more! “If you still crave more entertainment in Spruce Pine, join us on Sunday, July 18 under the tent at 6:30 p.m. to hear the Blue Ridge Brass and Montreat Scottish Pipes & Drums Band. It will be an inspirational evening of the great sounds of Scottish music performed by the very best band around. The event is sponsored by Mayland Community College and a donation will be taken following the event to benefit scholarships for much needed students.
