On Aug. 13, local pizza lovers gathered at the Garage at Biltmore in south Asheville for the inaugural Asheville Pizza Wars, waged among 13 local pizzerias. The restaurants competed against each other in two categories: cheese and specialty. The event, aside from being great fun, also raised more than $800 for non-profit Families Pursuing Justice of Western North Carolina.
Winners for the cheese category: third for Nona Mia Italian, second for Standard Pizza Company and first for Fiore’s Ristorante.
Specialty winners: Piazza East in third, Mellow Mushroom in second, and Frank’s Roman Pizza in first.
Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian netted the people’s choice award for their pizza.
Beer for the event was donated by Craggie Brewing Co., French Broad Brewery and Highland Brewing Co. via Skyland Distributing. Participating pizzerias were Iannucci’s Pizzeria, Earthfare, Pomodoros Cafe, Circle in the Square, My Father’s Pizza, Barley’s Taproom and Pizza, Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian, Nona Mia Italian, Frank’s Roman Pizza, Piazza East, Mellow Mushroom, Standard Pizza Company and Fiore’s Ristorante.
The event was organized by Gary Charles of GSocialMedia. All pizzerias and judges were nominated via Twitter or on his blog AskAsheville.
Xpress beer columnist Anne Fitten Glenn was also on hand to judge the event.
