From the neon lights at the local showcase in the (quieter, but certainly not quiet) side room to the high-energy dance party droning into the night in the main room, the revamped venue New Earth, formerly Club Hairspray, earned itself a spot among Asheville’s top concert venues during an electric Thursday night lineup.
In the side room, local synthesizer pop act The Jellyrox kicked off the night, followed by one-man-band and synth-jazz musician Tin Foil Hat. Experimental rock band Hello Hugo took the stage next, playing songs off its new album, Motorcycle Milkman, and local electronic soundscape band Aligning Minds rounded out the night with a set lasting until 2 a.m.
The main room’s energy accelerated exponentially during the night, first with a performance from Ann Arbor, Michigan sub pop band Wolf Eyes. A high-energy set by Black Dice took the crowd (and the volume) to another level, followed by a coordinated dance party — and conga line circling up the stairs and around the venue — led by Dan Deacon. Conceptual pop duo YACHT ended the night with a bang, tirelessly jumping across the stage, swinging microphones and leaning out into the crowd.
