Asheville School senior named a finalist for Morehead-Cain scholarship

From the press release:

ASHEVILLE, NC (January 30, 2012) Asheville School Senior Lawrence Waller was recently named a finalist for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Morehead-Cain Scholarship – one of the oldest and most prestigious four-year merit scholarships in the United States.

Waller, one of only 7 percent of nominees named as a finalist in 2012, will continue to the Finalist competition at UNC Chapel Hill from February 25-28, where he will join approximately 125 other finalists. While visiting the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, Waller will be interviewed by the Morehead-Cain Central Selection Committee. Of the group, approximately 55 will receive the scholarship.

According to their website, “The Morehead-Cain is a program proven to develop leaders in a framework intentionally nimble. We provide a net, then let scholars go, giving them the trust and freedom to pursue their own interests, mine their own potential, determine their own sphere of influence, and have their own impact.” (moreheadcain.org)

This scholarship includes an annual stipend that covers full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books and a laptop, travel, a four-year Summer Enrichment Program, and other student costs. This four-year scholarship is valued at approximately $85,000 for in-state and $164,000 for out-of-state students.

An Asheville School senior, Waller is a National Merit Semifinalist. He is the founder and president of the Young Republicans Club of Asheville School. A senior columnist for the Ashnoca, a student-run newspaper, Waller also serves as the student chair of the Asheville School Honor Council. He is a member of the Cum Laude Society and has participated in the Asheville School theater program for three years. Asheville School congratulates Lawrence Waller on his finalist status!
