Henderson County rejects joining Sustainable Communities Initiative

According to the Hendersonville Times-News, Henderson County commissioners have voted for the time being to reject participation in a federally funded Sustainable Communities initiative, after the man they appointed to represent the county reported to the board that it is a “rigged, despicable and costly project.”

GroWNC, funded by a $1.6 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, is a three-year project that seeks to develop regional and local strategies for “economic prosperity, quality growth and sustainable development” through a consortium of local governments, nonprofit organizations and businesses in the five-county region of Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties.

“Two studies of authoritarianism and environmental attitudes were under-taken. The first, a field study, found the opponents of a proposed riverside power plant to be less authoritarian and more environmentally concerned than supporters of the plants establishment. Overall, right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) correlated -.51 with environmental concern.” From the abstract of Authoritarianism and Attitudes Toward the Environment, P. Wesley Schultz
