In conjunction with a statewide tornado drill, UNC Asheville will conduct an intermittent, full-volume test of its emergency siren system between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012. The campus community as well as neighborhoods adjacent to campus may hear intermittent warning tones and spoken announcements. The test is to assess the volume, reach and clarity of the system.
The sirens are part of UNC Asheville’s comprehensive emergency notification system. The audible warning system would only be used if there is an active threat to the safety of the campus, such as a tornado, explosion, nearby hazardous materials spill or an active shooter. The audible alerts can be heard in outdoor areas on campus and in neighborhoods immediately surrounding the campus.
Governor Beverly Perdue has declared this week as Severe Weather Awareness Week, in cooperation with the National Weather Service and the N.C. Department of Public Safety.
The National Weather Service, in cooperation with local broadcasters, will conduct a statewide tornado drill in the form of required monthly testing on all NOAA weather radio and public alert systems at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
