AC-T: Snow results in extra vacation for county workers

Here’s an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:

Most Buncombe County employees will get almost an extra day and a half of vacation time because of county Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger’s decision to close his office for that amount of time during a February snowstorm.

The county will incur no out-of-pocket cost for giving workers the extra time off, County Manager Wanda Greene said Wednesday. …

Asheville got more than 8 inches of snow Feb. 12-13. Both city and county government declared states of emergency and many businesses and other government offices shut down.

Reisinger closed the deeds office for 13 hours when it would ordinarily have been open over those two days. …

Pay and benefits workers will receive during the extra time off total roughly $480,000, Greene said.

[Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Chair David] Gantt said the situation could prompt another look at the county’s policies for operating during inclement weather, but he opposes a change.

  1. “Buncombe County Commissioners approve a new budget, that includes an additional comp-day for about 1,400 employees. It will cost taxpayers around $500,000.00. It’s happening because one county department closed its doors during part of the February snowstorm. County policy dictates no department ever closes. Despite that, Register Of Deeds Drew Reisinger told his staff of 18 to stay home for a day and a half.”

“Barnardsville businessman Eddie Harwood came gunning for Buncombe County administrators at Buncombe County Commission’s June 3 meeting. When the smoke cleared, Harwood had lodged separate complaints against Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger and county commissioners Holly Jones, plus some jaundiced-eye comments about Commissioner Brownie Newman.”
