Max Queen files to run for Buncombe School Board

Here’s the press release from Max Queen:

Max Queen, a lifelong Enka resident and retired Vice-President of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, filed today for the opportunity to represent the Enka District on the Buncombe County Board of Education. Queen, his wife Janie and three children are all successful graduates of Enka District public schools, all have post-secondary degrees and work in either the education or health fields.

“We are a family with deep roots in the Enka Community and Buncombe County,” says Queen. “I am proud of all the teachers, counselors, coaches, and principals of our public schools have done to help Janie and I support and encourage our children to become the adults they are.”

Of his many qualifications to serve on the Board, Queen says, “I have spent my entire adult life working for Buncombe County, Mission/St. Joseph Hospitals and A-B Tech. I learned much from the mission and values of each organization, as well as visioning and strategic planning from the department heads and administrators with whom I had the privilege of working. This background will prove invaluable if I am elected to serve as a school board member.”

Queen identifies six issues and opportunities facing Buncombe County Schools which he would like to help the Board of Education address. These are:

•    The Buncombe County School Budget, including teacher salaries, teacher assistants and support positions, instructional materials, technology and efficient operations.

•    Recruitment and retention of the best educators and administrators available.

•    Campus safety, emergency preparedness, adequate School Resource Officers and anti-bullying policies.

•    Continued repair and replacement of aging facility infrastructure.

•    Increasing opportunities and partnerships with local Community Colleges, Colleges and Universities.

•    Responding to competition for student enrollment by private and charter schools by establishing Buncombe County Schools as the preferred provider of K-12 education with a focus on student, faculty and staff success.

Queen has an M.A.Ed. Educational Administration in the Two Year College and a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Management from Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, N.C.
He also received two (2) Associate degrees. One in Nursing (R.N.) and the second in Emergency Medical Science (Paramedic) from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. He also completed the Emergency Medical Services Management Institute at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

“I have a grandchild attending Buncombe County Early College, one at Enka Middle, and two who will begin their educational journey at Pisgah Elementary in a few short years,” says Queen. “Education has always been a priority for me, for my wife, children and grandchildren, and I would welcome the opportunity to support a quality education for all children across Buncombe County as an elected member of the Board of Education.”
