WHAT: “Tea in the Orient,” high tea party
WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 18, 4-6pm
WHERE: Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, 1304 Ashe St., Hendersonville
WHY: The Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County will hold an Asian-themed tea, hat contest and silent auction in support of the club’s annual programming.
During the first hour, guests are invited to sip champagne and peruse the silent auction items. Proceeds will support the Smart Girls Initiative, which focuses on self-esteem building and female mentoring. These goals are furthered by the club’s Fairy Godmothers, a sorority of women who serve as mentors to the club’s young women.
“We are trying to build a positive identity for girls by focusing on relationships, hygiene, body image and the dispelling of myths and taboos,” says resource development coordinator Jessica Edney. “In fact, this year the club is one of 10 in the nation chosen to pilot the new Smart Girls curriculum focusing on issues such as teen pregnancy, and recognizing and avoiding abusive relationships.”
Success stories, life experiences and the club’s importance will be discussed. This year’s keynote speaker, Asheville jazz singer Kat Williams, will share her stories of overcoming a difficult upbringing.
All proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club. Tickets to “Tea in the Orient” are $75 or $100 to become a Fairy Godmother. For more information and tickets, contact Jessica Edney at 693-9444 or jessicae@bghendersonco.org.
