MedWest-Harris & Swain Foundation to host disco-themed gala

From the press release:

Sylva, N.C. – The MedWest-Harris & Swain Foundation is presenting “That ‘70s Gala,” an evening of disco dancing, fine dining, a silent auction and more at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25 at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel Event Center in Cherokee.

“That ’70s Gala” will raise money to renovate MedWest-Harris’ Mother and Baby suites, which are on the third floor of the hospital. Nearly 800 babies are born each year at MedWest-Harris, receiving excellent care from the obstetricians, midwives, nursing staff and pediatricians who care for the families on the Mother and Baby Unit.

Now in its 13th year, the Gala is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser. Jeannine Sowers and Kim Preston are chairing this year’s event.

Through the years, the Gala has raised funds to provide free mammograms to underserved women in Jackson and Swain counties and to purchase equipment like a digital mammography system and laboratory and nuclear medicine technology.

“That ‘70s Gala” will include live music from The Vinyl Brothers Big Band, dinner and a silent auction. Partygoers are encouraged to dress in 1970s style.

The Gala again feature Disco King and Queen candidates campaigning for votes to help raise money for the event. The winning male and female candidates will be awarded for the most funds raised. Last year, the candidates alone raised more than $13,000.

This year’s Disco King candidates are Howard D. Allman, agency owner of Nationwide Insurance Co. in Sylva; Jim Miller, associate vice chancellor for development at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee; and Charles H. Toledo, MD, FAAP of WNC Pediatric and Adolescent Care in Sylva.

The Disco Queen candidates this year are Currie Custer, MD of Current Dermatology and Ob/Gyn in Sylva; Katherine Trousdale of Keller Williams Realty in Bryson City; and Patty Ward, vice president of nursing for MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain.

Reservations for “That ‘70s Gala” are $100 per person. To be a Table Sponsor, the cost is $1,200 for a table of 10. Checks can be sent to the MedWest-Harris & Swain Foundation, 98 Doctors Dr., Suite 315, Sylva, North Carolina, 28779.
