UNC Asheville Muslim Student Association
“Women in Islam,” a panel discussion featuring three prominent Muslim women, will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by two UNC Asheville student organizations, the Muslim Student Association and the Feminist Collective Club.
The three panelists will be:
Robina Niyaz, founder and executive director of Turning Point for Women and Families, a New York City organization founded in 2004, which provides direct services and support to Muslim women suffering from domestic violence, and which has been featured on CNN and Larry King Live.
Tayyibah Taylor, founding editor-in-chief and publisher of Azizah magazine, “the world’s window to the Muslim American woman … a vehicle for her voice and a catalyst for her empowerment,” now in its 13th year.
Suzanne Hamid, a recent UNC-Charlotte graduate and founder of the blog, muslimsofcharlotte.com, “a realistic and personal look at the ever-diverse group of Muslims” in Charlotte.The panel discussion will provide a picture of the lives of Muslim women and their roles in the workplace, in Muslim households and communities, and in Western society.
