Press release
from Brevard Rotary
The 30th annual Flight of the Vampire Race will have a new start time, 8:00 am, Saturday morning October 27, starting at Brevard College Gym. Not only does the race have a new start time but there will be the addition of the 10k route, 1k race for children, a competitive walk and an education raffle.
Traditionally, the Flight of the Vampire has only featured 5k runners. The 10k route will be identical as the 2012 July 4th race, which proved to be very popular earlier this summer. The 1K route will be for children under 8 years of age. BC students will conduct this race on the BC track. Children will run in their age category and awards will be presented.
This year’s event will also welcome competitive walk to both 5 and 10k routes. Walkers of all abilities are encouraged to participate. The competitive walk in the ‘Vampire’ race will not be a judged event. Walkers will, however, be timed just as runners. Awards will be presented in the walk category as well as the running awards.
Also this year, an education raffle, known as ‘Apples 4 Education’, will be held on race day immediately after the race at 10:00 am. Apples tickets can be purchased at Love’s Jewelry, Mt. 1st Bank, TD Bank, Purcell Realty and the BC athletic office. Each ticket represents a numbered apple. On race day hundreds of apples will be floated down the BC stream on campus. The first apple over the finish line wins half of the final raffle proceeds. The other half goes to support local educational projects of the Brevard Rotary Club. Apple tickets will be sold till 9.30am on race day, October 27.
Holiday costumes will be encouraged, however there will be no costume awards due the already costume event in the downtown festival later that day, being sponsored by the ‘Heart of Brevard’.
To preregister, runners/walkers should just go to www.brevardrotary.org. Again all active military will run/walk at no charge. For corporate and group rates, contact race director, Sammy Kicklighter, at sammykicklighter@gmail.com. Also, race day walk up registrants are very much encouraged. Preregistration fees will apply. Registration forms are also available at the Brevard College Athletic Office. The race will segue to the ‘Heart of Brevard’ festival being held later that day on Main St.
The Rotary Club of Brevard hosts three races each year to fund their community outreach programs, The White Squirrel on Memorial Day weekend, The Firecracker Run on July 4 and the Flight of the Vampire near Halloween. At the popular races, hundreds of runners participate and over twenty states have been represented.
The Rotary Club of Brevard is a group of business-minded professionals and individuals that meets at College Walk every Tuesday at Noon. For more information, go to brevard.rotary.org.
