Back in early November, chef Elliott Moss transformed MG Road on Wall Street into “The Thunderbird,” an extended restaurant pop-up that features the kind of food he loves cooking. Some would call it elevated retro-southern cuisine, Elliott likes to just call it “his food.” Anyway you cut it, there’s clearly a thread running from the family diners and country buffets that Elliott grew up with in Florence, South Carolina to the well balanced cuisine coming out of Elliott’s kitchen now. It’s the same kind of places that have inspired him to open Buxton Hall Barbecue, the restaurant he’s building in the up-and-coming South Slope neighborhood of Asheville. Two months ago, Buxton Hall was experiencing some construction delays, and Moss was finding it increasingly hard to sit on his hands and wait. Hence, the birth of The Thunderbird, a place where he could assemble his culinary crew for Buxton and keep doing what he loves doing in the meantime: cooking for people.

In the process of opening Buxton Hall, Elliott has found some kindred spirits in his soon-to-be neighbors Burial Beer Company. Located just behind Buxton Hall on Collier Street in the South Slope neighborhood, Burial is a small operation that is growing, and has garnered a tight crew of fans that appreciate their approach to quality brewing. It was a natural fit for Elliott and Burial to throw a beer dinner together. As we speak, Elliott is getting busy sampling Burial’s robust list of brews, his creative wheels turning as to what dish he’s going to pair with what brew. Stay tuned for what Elliott and Burial have in the works, and make sure to book your tickets now. Seating is very limited, and you don’t want to miss out.
