Citizen-Times: governor’s budget would close Vance birthplace

From the Asheville Citizen-Times:

WEAVERVILLE — The proposed budget released by Gov. Pat McCrory would close four historic sites in North Carolina including the Vance Birthplace in Buncombe County.

The proposal would also close the Museum of History’s Old Fort/Mountain Gateway site.

The Vance site has three full-time employees and two part-time staff members. The site manager, Chris Morton, referred questions about the proposal to the head of the state Division of Historic Resources.

The budget proposal says closing all four sites and the museum would save $498,712. “While the sites will be closed to the public, the sites will be maintained and preserved,” the budget proposal states.
