Community Housing Coalition hosts building suppliers thrift sale in Marshall May 9

The Community Housing Coalition of Madison County will hold an experimental thrift sale on Saturday, May 9 in Marshall to gauge interest in the sale of used building supplies and household wares in a more permanent location. The sale will be located behind the Madison County Arts Council building on Back Street.

The CHC, which works “to promote and facilitate healthy, safe, and affordable housing through advocacy, education, and resource development,” in rural communities in Madison County, according to their website, is testing the waters on the viability of setting up a thrift store which would offer community members a place to “donate and purchase surplus building materials and larger household goods and appliances.”

According to the CHC, there are “currently no options for donating or purchasing these types of items within Madison County, and many good materials are thrown away or taken to Asheville to support agencies that do not do work in Madison County.”

The non-profit organization invites residents to come by and share their thoughts on a permanent location, which would operate on a similar model to organizations like Goodwill.

Items slated to be sold at the sale on May 9 include interior doors, toilets, old single pane farmhouse windows, 20’x20’ rubber roofing membrane, and electrical supplies, among others. Proceeds will go to fund the CHC’s programs in the county.
