Author Katey Schultz lives near intentional community Celo, N.C. (in a 1972 airstream trailer, at the edge of the Pisgah National Forest). According to her bio, “Katey teaches workshops, mentors via correspondence, freelances, and travels for her work and is currently writing a novel set in Afghanistan.” Her new book, Flashes of War, follows a number of characters (returning U.S. soldier and pragmatic jihadist, an Afghan mother and listless American sister, an amputee and a ghost). Press for the collection of short stories says it’s “written in clear, accessible language with startling metaphors, this unforgettable journey leaves aside judgment, bringing us closer to a broader understanding of war by focusing on individuals, their motivations, and their impossible decisions.”
Schultz launches Flashes of War at Malaprop’s on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, at 7 p.m. (She’ll also be reading at Penland School of Crafts, Northlight Hall, 67 Doras Trail on Sunday, June 2 at 4 p.m.; and at the Celo Inn, 45 Seven Mile Ridge Rd. in Burnsville on Monday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m.)
