Press release
From Asheville Yoga Center:
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA (May 27, 2013)- Stephanie Keach, studio-owner and director of Asheville Yoga Center’s 200-hour teacher training curriculum, shuns the conventional approach to education. Her program incorporates techniques that re-awaken the conditioned mind using experiential, student-driven learning. The studio now offers a 21-day intensive teacher training program nearly every month, with only a few spots remaining in its next Total Yoga Immersion, beginning June 9th. Since moving to their brand-new space at 211 S. Liberty Street in 2012, the studio’s comprehensive immersion programs have been wildly popular, drawing students from all over the Southeast and often selling out months in advance.
Susannah Maddux, a recent graduate of the Total Yoga Immersion, explains that Keach’s method caters to the modern “monkey mind” and a “wide variety of different learning [styles].” While public education becomes increasingly standardized, Keach challenges convention and rote learning by emphasizing individual interest, hands-on activities, and a broad, well-rounded curriculum. This approach aims to inspire and motivate learners in order to enhance to learning experience. Students in the program learn from a team of senior yoga instructors with different areas of expertise and decide which topics they will explore in greater depth. Trainees might practice hands-on adjustments, discuss the differences between classical and tantric yoga philosophy, troubleshoot injuries, act out anatomical cues, and participate in a kundalini class–all in one day.
Although the idea of a 3-week immersion made her “a little anxious at first,” Maddux is enlivened by the experience and knows that this is only the beginning; she says she will “continue to come back to so many things that we touched on that will guide me through life. I really do feel empowered now to share those little gems with other people too.” She has a message for those who might be intimidated by the demanding pace of such a comprehensive program: “Take the leap and see what it can offer you.”
