From the Hendersonville Times-News
By Nancy Tanker
…The new policy, which could be approved during this evening’s school board meeting, is two-pronged. It prevents “social promotion,” when a teacher promotes a student to the next grade despite the fact that the student has failed to demonstrate certain proficiencies at their grade level.
Instead, the new policy focuses states unequivocally that “a student be retained in the third grade if the student fails to demonstrate reading proficiency appropriate for a third-grade student, as demonstrated on a state-approved standardized test” administered at the end of the school year.
The second part of the policy states what happens if the student fails to demonstrate that proficiency.
