Mars Hill College Athletic Training Department recently presented a service award to Dr. Jay Jansen for 15 years of service to the department and the college’s athletic teams. Jansen is a sports medicine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon at Blue Ridge Bone and Joint Clinic in Asheville.
Dr. Jansen serves as the team physician for athletics and as the medical director for Mars Hill’s accredited athletic training curriculum. Jansen serves as team physician at all home and away Mars Hill College football games and arranges for coverage when he cannot personally attend. According to Allen Shelley, head athletic trainer and assistant professor of athletic training at Mars Hill, the on-field treatment and recommendations that Jansen provides are often crucial for athletes in the first moments after injury.
Jansen performs on-campus injury clinics once a week during the fall semester, and every two to three weeks during the spring semester. During these injury clinics he will see anywhere from fifteen to twenty or more student athletes free of charge. Jansen also provides priority scheduling for injured athletes at Mars Hill.
The MHC Athletic Training Department presented the award during an appreciation lunch it provided at Blue Ridge Bone and Joint on May 28 for Jansen and his staff. The department has given Dr. Jansen a five and 10 year service award in years past.
Mars Hill College is a private, liberal arts institution offering over 30 baccalaureate degrees and one graduate degree in elementary education.
