APD Lieutenant claims he was “forced to change the facts” in case involving chief’s son

An Asheville police lieutenant claims he was forced to change the facts of an investigation into a car crash involving the police chief’s son. Lt. William Wilke was the scene commander for the March 9th accident involving Chad Anderson, son of Police Chief William Anderson. In a statement given to News 13’s Frank Fraboni, Lt. Wilke says on March 13th, he went to the city manager to express his concerns over what he knew to be “false and misleading information” given by Chief Anderson to the newspaper, and was told “to wait until the SBI investigation was complete”.

Shortly after the story broke, city of Asheville Public Information Officer Dawa Hitch sent the following to Asheville City Council:

Mayor Bellamy and City Council Members,

It has come to my attention within the last 30 minutes that Lt. Bill Wilke has released a statement to the media in which he states he has concerns about the way the accident involving Chad Anderson was handled.

We are currently gathering facts along with what is being reported in the media and will update you as soon as we have more information.

    This is a pretty serious charge. If the Chief of Police cannot be trusted, and used his office to protect his son from accountability, one would expect the claim to be investigated thoroughly and objectively. If it is found to be true, then the City must dismiss the Chief.

    I could not believe what I read in the paper today, D.A Ron Moore stated that he would not seek and charges against Asheville Police Chief Anderson,,that was so hard to accept. A high ranking office came forward to put some light on the subject and Mr Moore more or less laughed it off. Unbelieveable,
