Shelter dogs at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR) will have a new place to play, thanks to the support of the Donald C. Jones Foundation and Corning Incorporated.
The Donald C. Jones Foundation provided BWAR with $90,000 to purchase an area near its offices and turn into a park for shelter dogs. Not long after the foundation’s commitment, Corning asked to help physically build the park.
“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we received these amazing gifts so close to each other,” said Denise Bitz, BWAR’s founder and executive director. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to improve the lives of our shelter dogs thanks to Don and his generous legacy and Corning.”
As part of its annual meeting, the Corning Enterprise Networks group will help build the Donald C. Jones Memorial Dog Park on Wednesday, June 26, with a ground-breaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Approximately 150 of Corning’s 3,000 North Carolina-based employees plan to help with construction of the park as part of their meeting activities.
Functionally, the park will provide additional opportunities for animal residents of the shelter to exercise and play throughout the day.
“Increased activity helps the dogs combat the stresses of living in an adoption center,” explained Tristan Rehner, BWAR’s training and behavior coordinator. “Additionally, seeing them playing and showing their true personalities helps the dogs and potential adopters form a connection.”
Corning completed a similar project at the Catawba County Animal Shelter in Hickory, North Carolina more than two years ago.
“We are proud to aide Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in its mission to tend to the physical and emotional needs of homeless animals,” said Stuart Hoiness, senior vice president, Enterprise Networks, Corning Cable Systems. “Providing a safe playing ground for the dogs at Brother Wolf is an example of Corning’s proactive commitment to improving the quality of life in the areas – near and far – in which its employees live and work.”
Added Bitz: “I believe that if you do good things for animals and the people who love them, good things will happen to you. The support of the Donald C. Jones Foundation and Corning show it to be true.”
