The Fair is free and open to the public. With over 5.7 million Americans not knowing they have diabetes, this is a perfect time to make sure you are not one of them and if you are, what steps you need to take.
Who is at risk for diabetes? Those with a family member with diabetes, women who have had gestational diabetes, people who are overweight or obese and certain ethnic groups are at a higher risk for diabetes than the general population.
What are the symptoms of diabetes? Excessive thirst, blurred vision, fatigue and frequent urination are some of the symptoms. However, some people with diabetes have no noticeable symptoms at all. That is why it is important to have your blood sugar checked especially if you have any of the risk factors listed above. Some complications of uncontrolled diabetes include heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and high blood pressure.
Diabetes can be controlled often by diet, but in some cases your doctor might prescribe insulin or other diabetes medications to help control your blood sugar.
