Sat. Oct. 12 – Shook Twins w/ The Moon and You – Jack of the Wood – Asheville, NC
Identical twins Laurie Shook (vocals, banjo, percussion and beatboxing) and Katelyn Shook (vocals, guitar and mandolin), are at the heart of the quirky folk band, Shook Twins. A revolving cast of musicians round out the band and include Kyle Volkman (bass), Niko Daoussis (bass, mandolin, guitar), and Anna Tivel (fiddle). The Shook Twins intertwine gorgeous “twin” harmonies with an eclectic and eccentric blend of folk, roots, pop and fun. But don’t be fooled. The Shook Twins are not your average folk group. They have a few tricks up their sleeves. Laurie may drop a beatbox in the middle of a song, while Katelyn plays the guitar, glockenspiel, mandolin, and sings into a telephone and bocks like a chicken. Laurie plays wah-wah banjo and loops various melodies and beats to make it sound like more than just two identical twin sisters. It’s a refreshing romp filled with unexpected surprises.

The Moon and You is a touring cello/guitar duo. The Wilmington, NC Star News Online describes the band as “[a] duo from Asheville, N.C. that blends cello and guitar to craft folk music with a 1970’s singer-songwriter feel in the vein of Joan Baez or Harry Nilsson. Together they make tender songs that feel like a warm homemade blanket.”
The Moon and You is rooted in the rich music scene of Asheville, NC. Ryan Furstenberg and Melissa Hyman began playing together for fun when both were part of successful bands touring the Southeast. When those bands went their separate ways, Ryan and Melissa chose to join forces rather than get a job. The result of this collaboration – between an impossibly sassy cellist from New York and a masterful and whimsical fingerstyle guitarist from Eastern North Carolina – is hard to forget, but easy to fall for.
