Campaign for Southern Equality calls on AG Cooper to cease defending same-sex marriage ban

Full announcement from the Campaign for Southern Equality:

As you’ve hopefully heard, Virginia Attorney General Herring announced yesterday that he will not defend the state’s ban on same-sex marriage because he believes it is unconstitutional. This is a critical development in the South that gives us hope.

The Campaign for Southern Equality is calling for North Carolina Attorney General Cooper to stand up for all North Carolinians by ceasing to defend Amendment One. You can read coverage from The Asheville Citizen-Times here.

We empathize with the difficult position that Attorney General Cooper is in. Discriminatory laws like Amendment One hurt all of us – those they target and those tasked with enforcing them. Standing up to an unjust law – as a citizen or an elected official – can involve real risks and thus takes real courage.

As we have traveled the South with the WE DO Campaign, I have seen so many LGBT people find the courage within themselves to stand up to unjust laws. The urgency of taking action now is clear: every day that we live without basic rights and with the burdens of anti-LGBT animus, people suffer. We can no longer wait for equality.
