Asheville Police Department Applies for Justice Assistance Grant (JAG)
Asheville, NC (June 27, 2016): The Asheville Police Department is applying for funding through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) 2016 Local Solicitation Program. This US Department of Justice funding is provided to enhance partnerships between Federal, State and Local governments to create safer communities through the prevention and reduction of crime and violence.
The grant awards funds to local government for equipment, training, technical assistance, information systems and supplies to enhance local law enforcement. The Asheville Police Department and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office are jointly applying for $55,150.00.
If awarded the Asheville Police Department plans to use the grants funds to purchase Tasers to provide more equipment to patrol officers. These devices are designed to enhance officer safety and gain subject compliance.
The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office plans to use its portion of the grant funding to purchase patrol vehicle modems.
