Amy Churchill, first elected to the Buncombe County Board of Education for a four-year term in 2012, has filed for re-election. As a representative of the Roberson District, Churchill has invested her time in listening to the concerns and needs of parents, teachers, staff and community members, and advocating for the most effective education policies to benefit the county’s children. She looks forward to continuing that advocacy for a second term.
“The past four years have been filled with new experiences and opportunities to learn about the challenges our students and schools face, and to look for ways to improve and enhance learning,” says Churchill. “It has been gratifying beyond measure to champion the cause of our public schools; to contribute to our accomplishments, such as the dramatic increase in our graduation rate; and to collaborate with teachers and staff to help students fulfill their hopes and dreams for the future.”
During her time on the Board, Churchill has maintained a laser focus on enhancing learning opportunities, as evidenced by her considerable involvement in the planning and development of the STEM-themed Martin Nesbitt Discovery Academy, and support for the integration of STEM education across the K-12 curriculum in all Buncombe County Schools. She also sponsored a resolution to strongly encourage the state to increase per-pupil funding to at least pre-recession levels, which would provide much needed funding for textbooks, instructional materials and supplies.
Churchill believes strongly in a nonpartisan school board, and in working closely with her fellow school board members to achieve positive results. She was instrumental in getting Board meetings videotaped and streamed via the Web to increase transparency and access for all, and serves on the Board for Directors for the North Carolina School Board Association. An employee of Mission Health, Churchill lives in Arden with her husband Ben and daughter Maddy, a student at T. C. Roberson H.S.
