APD warns of scam targeting senior citizens

Press release from Asheville Police Department:

Asheville, NC (July 14, 2016): The Asheville Police Department has received reports of a scam targeting senior citizens. Individuals posing as federal agents are contacting community members on their home phones and requesting that a large sum of money be paid in the form of a wire transfer in order to avoid grand jury indictment or arrest.

In order to avoid a money wiring scam the Asheville Police Department urges you to never wire money to someone you do not know, even if you feel like you know the person or the person states that they are related to you. Scammers are extremely well versed in persuasion.

If you receive a call similar to the one above you are encouraged to contact the Asheville Police Department at (828) 252-1110.
