Oct. 4 World Affairs Council Lecture at UNC Asheville to Focus on International Finance
“International Finance Today” will be the topic when the fall series of monthly World Affairs Council talks continues at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center. Donald Mayer, chair of the Department of Business Ethics and Legal Studies and professor-in-residence at the Daniels College of Business, University of Denver, will discuss the problems and promises of global capitalism.
In his public speaking, publishing and teaching, Mayer addresses issues of corporate governance, criminal liability and corporate corruption, corporate social responsibility, ethics and global capitalism, military security and private companies. A graduate of Duke University Law School who also earned an LLM degree in international and comparative law at Georgetown University Law Center, Mayer has taught at universities in Europe as well as the U.S. He has been an attorney in private practice and served in the Office of the U.S. Air Force Staff Judge Advocate.
The World Affairs Council lecture series will continue through December on the first Tuesday of every month:
- Nov. 1 – “Pirates, Anarchists and Cowboys” – Donald Puchala, Byrnes Professor of International Studies, Emeritus, at the University of South Carolina, will examine the growth and strength of ISIS.
- Dec. 6 – “International Human Rights: At what cost to the rest of international law?” – Ingrid Wuerth, Helen Strong Curry Chair in International Law and Director of the International Legal Studies Program at Vanderbilt Law School will discuss the impact of the “responsibility to protect” – the global political commitment endorsed by all U.N. member states.
The lectures are sponsored by the WNC chapter of the World Affairs Council, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC Asheville, and the university’s Department of Political Science.
