Buncombe County Recreation Services has opened the 2017-2018 cycle of Community Recreation Grants. The grants focus on supplemental funding for qualified organizations within Buncombe County to promote recreational, fitness, and health and wellness initiatives as well as community-based activities and capital improvements that increase recreational opportunities for the communities served. Grants may range in amounts from $500 – $6,000, depending on the amount of funding available and the number of qualifying applicants.Eligible entities include Buncombe County non-profits focused on recreational, fitness, and health and wellness activities. This funds are intended to be a leveraging tool that promote partnerships between the County and area non-profits and are not a donation, funding stream, or sponsorship opportunity. Programs applying for funding should assist Buncombe County Recreation Services in achieving its mission and are required to provide clear timelines and explanations regarding funding requests. The objective of the grants is to extend the reach of the County in its recreation focus areas; grant applicants are required to articulate the estimated impact the grants will have on the community.The mission of Buncombe County Recreation Services is to improve the quality of life within our community by providing high quality recreational facilities, opportunities for social interaction, and programming which encourages health and wellness through active lifestyles.During the 2016 and 2017 funding cycle, Shiloh Community Organization received community recreation grants that helped provide money to develop the Shiloh Legacy Art Trail project. The Shiloh Legacy Art Trail is a walking trail for all ages and acts as a natural greenway and connector path to adjoining streets in the community. The trail provides opportunities for active recreation, educational and cultural programming and shares a historical significance of the Shiloh Community.“For the last two consecutive years the Community Recreation Grant has supported the Shiloh Community Association’s efforts to create much needed infrastructure for Shiloh Garden and the Shiloh Legacy Art Trail. These projects were co-created with youth and community members.The results have led to an increase in community pride along with supporting the SCA in creating a space for agritourism to thrive and share the rich history of the oldest African American community in Asheville. In addition, we are setting a stage for engaging in a conversation and dialogue and learn how the environment, race and social justice are interconnected” says Lauralee Petritz, SCA Garden Program Coordinator.Additionally, Norma Baynes, SCA Liaison said, “We are grateful we had the opportunity to receive the BCRG. This Funding made it possible for residents to cultivate and educate our youth about health through growing food, nutrition and yoga movement.”The grant application deadline is Friday, October 13, 2017. Late applications will be rejected.
