Since this story ran in the Sept. 13 print edition of Xpress, the city of Asheville’s legal team has said it believes it has an answer to the question “Who owns Pack Square?”
After an arduous search through Buncombe County property records, “Our outside counsel has determined that it appears that the City owns title to property where the Vance and Lee monuments are located,” says City Attorney Robin Currin. “This conclusion was based on the County land records and other relevant documents.” According to Currin, the 1977 deed between Buncombe County and the City of Asheville (detailed below under “Ghost in the desert” subhead) is the smoking gun. “We would contend [the 1977 deed] conveyed title of the property to the City,” she says.
