Walk-On/Ride-On activities planned around Asheville on May 17

Walk-On/Ride-On, Thursday, May 17

Is your part of town walkable? Want to take the bus but not sure where to start? For the first time ever, specific activities are planned in North, South, East, and West Asheville, Walk-On/Ride-On addresses pedestrian, bicycle, and transit opportunities specific to your neighborhood and can impact all citizens of Buncombe County in the future.

As part of the 2018 Strive event, Walk On Ride On has routes, guide, and activities that support  active transportation opportunities. The Walk On, Ride On provides additional support for those interested and curious about Asheville’s developing multi-modal system. There is something for everyone. The best part – the first 16 riders on each route will ride for free!  Tickets are provided complements of AARP, dedicated to making our community more livable for all ages.

In North Asheville, the connectivity between Mountain Mobility’s Trailblazer and Asheville Regional Transit (ART) will be featured.  Meet other riders and guides at 10:45 at Ingles on Weaver Blvd in Weaverville for a ride from Weaverville to Asheville.  The transit ride will leave on the Trailblazer, transfer to the N1 and arrive at the downtown ART station at 11:50.  Riders can enjoy a health fair at 50 Asheland Ave. or enjoy the town until the bus departs again from the ART station at 2:00PM, returning to Ingles at 2:55PM.

In West Asheville, local shops and walkability will be featured.  Arrive at the Haywood / Argyle stop on the W1 at 9:06 AM or the W2 to arrive at 5:36 PM to enjoy discounts at Floras Forage Café and Harvest Records.  Each group will commence with a discussion in Christopher’s garden to discuss strategies for improving Haywood.

In South Asheville, experience the ease of riding into downtown without a car.  A group will leave the stop at Gerber and Hendersonville Rd and hop on the S6 at 12:50 PM and arrive downtown at the ART station at 1:30. Riders can experience the health fair and/or shop on their own.  The return trip will leave ART at 3:05 returning to Gerber Village at 3:35 PM.

The East Asheville ride will focus on active transportation and kids!  Students and family members from Evergreen Community Charter School will gather at Penny Cup Coffee on Beverly Rd at 7AM.  At 7:15 they will ride out for the mile journey to school, arriving by 8:00 AM. This trip will include police escorts and experienced riders to ensure safety.

All riders are welcomed to take their bicycle each bus, including trailblazers, have bike racks.  These walk and rides were organized by concerned community members and organizations including AARP NC, Active Routes to School, Asheville on Bikes, Evergreen Community Charter School, EWANA, Flora, Harvest Records, Land of Sky Regional Council, Mountain Mobility and Penny Cup Coffee Co.  The Health Fair is sponsored by the Asheville Buncombe Institute for Parity Achievement (ABIPA).  Learn more at www.strivenottodrive.org.
