Press release from the N.C. Department of Commerce:
The NCWorks Commission is scheduled to hold its quarterly meeting in Asheville on Wednesday, August 8. The meeting is open to the public.
Led by a private sector chair, the 33-member NCWorks Commission includes representatives from the business community, heads of state workforce agencies, educators and community leaders. All members are appointed by the Governor, other than certain members who serve ex-officio. The Governor is himself an ex-officio member.
The NCWorks Commission recommends policies and strategies that enable the state’s workforce and businesses to compete in the global economy. The Commission is designated as the state’s workforce development board under the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
Agenda items for the Aug. 8 meeting are set to include:
- Discussing the new “Finish Line Grants” program, announced by Gov. Roy Cooper in July, which will support community college students
- Certifying new “NCWorks Certified Career Pathways,” regional plans that are designed by employers in collaboration with workforce development and education professionals to help job seekers gain the knowledge, skills, credentials and experiences to enter particular high-demand careers
- Receiving an update on “Sector Partnerships,” which bring together employers from the same industry and in a shared labor market region to address workforce and other competitiveness needs;
- Certifying NCWorks Career Centers in the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board area (Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties) and in the Southwestern Workforce Development Board area (Clay, Graham, Haywood, Macon, Jackson, Swain and Cherokee counties)
- Spotlighting successful local workforce development programs.
WHO: Commission members hail from throughout the state. Kevin Trapani of Orange County chairs the Commission. A majority of Commission members represent the private sector.
WHAT: NCWorks Commission Quarterly Meeting
WHEN: Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
WHERE: A-B Tech Conference Center (340 Victoria Road, Asheville, NC)
WHY: The mission of the NCWorks Commission is to ensure North Carolina has an innovative, relevant, effective, and efficient workforce development system that develops adaptable, work ready, skilled talent to meet the current and future needs of workers and businesses to achieve and sustain economic prosperity. To accomplish this mission, the Commission brings together a host of partners to enhance cooperation and coordination among government agencies, educational institutions and employers. This work complements Gov. Roy Cooper’s “NC Job Ready” workforce initiative, which is built on three core principles: enhancing skills and education attainment, employer leadership in partnerships to prepare workers for evolving industries, and tapping into local innovation.
