Odyssey School celebrates Elders Day Oct. 26

Press release from Odyssey School:

In complement with the changing of the seasons, Odyssey School presents Elders Day, an annual recognition and appreciation of intergenerational connections. On October 26, elders of the school community, whether they be grandparents, neighbors, or other individuals significant in students’ lives, will be celebrated throughout the day.

The day will begin with the honored guests included in a mindfulness session presented by River Guerguerian, Music Director, and Samata DeCori, Wellness Coordinator. Within each classroom, elders and students will explore meaningful experiences through activities such as gratitude trees and elder-child interviews. A showcase of the many talents of Odyssey students will serve as the finale to the day’s festivities.

At Odyssey, students are encouraged to lead with an authentic sense of self, and that identity is borne out of their own experiences as well as connections with others. As an intergenerational celebration, Elders Day is a acknowledgment and appreciation of ancestry and the many gifts that are passed along from others.

“Elders Day is an important way our community comes together to celebrate the diversity of experience and the passage of time,” says Cory Adams, Executive Director. “Our students get to share their authentic selves on stage by singing, dancing, and being lovingly reflected by the elders in their lives.”

Elders Day is one of many student opportunities to learn and grow from others’ insights and experiences. Since its inception over 10 years ago, Odyssey School has followed an integral model which provides students with multiple perspectives on subjects: physical, emotional, mental, moral, aesthetic, and spiritual. Students are supported through their strengths and weaknesses to find their paths to life-long learning.

Odyssey School is located at 90 Zillicoa Street, Asheville. Questions about the school or Elders Day are welcome and may be addressed to learn@odysseycommunity.org or 828.259.3653
