Abby Wambach is the featured speaker for The Community Foundation’s 15th Annual Power of the Purse® luncheon taking place Tuesday, May 21, at the Expo Center at the Crowne Plaza in Asheville.
Wambach, American soccer icon, Olympic gold medalist, author and activist, was the United States’ leading scorer in the 2007 and 2011 Women’s World Cup tournaments and the 2004 and 2012 Olympics. Her ability to wear down defenses with her physical play, aerial game and hard running has been a key to the USA’s success. After winning the Women’s World Cup in 2015, Wambach retired. With 184 goals, she is the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history.
A true leader on and off the field, she is dedicating the next chapter of her career to fighting for equality and inclusion across industries. She is The New York Times bestselling author of Forward: A Memoir and the recently-releasedWolfpack. She is co-founder of Wolfpack Endeavor, which is revolutionizing leadership development for women in the workplace and beyond.
Power of the Purse® brings well-known female speakers and personalities to Western North Carolina to celebrate the power of women’s philanthropy. Past speakers have included Maria Hinojosa, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Mae Jemison, Piper Kerman, Olympia Snowe, Dee Dee Myers, Anna Deavere Smith, Gloria Steinem, Jennifer Buffett, Cokie Roberts and Anna Quindlen.
Program includes the announcement of 2019 grants from the Women for Women giving circle. The grant pool includes $51,000 from The Women’s Fund endowment. With the 2019 grants, Women for Women will have distributed more than $3.8 million in grants since 2006 supporting nonprofits that serve disadvantaged women and girls.
Proceeds from the event benefit The Women’s Fund, a permanent endowment of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina that supports the unmet needs of women and girls across the region.
The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina (CFWNC) works with families, businesses and nonprofits to strengthen communities through the creation of charitable funds and strategic grantmaking. The Foundation runs 18 competitive grant programs and more than 60 scholarship programs and helps nonprofits by managing their endowments and enabling capacity building and best practices.
