Local organizers with The North Carolina Look Out and Sunrise Movement Asheville will co-host an Asheville rally on Wednesday, May 22, in support of reproductive justice as nationwide rallies are occurring simultaneously for reproductive justice and to call for an end to abortion bans. The rally is in response to the state of Alabama passing a law banning abortions even in cases of rape and incest. Additionally, in North Carolina today, the General Assembly is attempting to override Governor Cooper’s veto of SB 359, the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” in the NC House. Organizers of the rally advocate that the bill is not grounded in medical science or fact and is based on a false narrative that doctors aren’t already providing appropriate care, thus we must stand against it.
Speakers include Nikki Harris from Planned Parenthood Asheville, Laura Malintzin-Arts with Latinx in the South, Nicole Townsend with Southerners on New Ground, local poet and activist Taylon Breeden, local poet Abbie Young, local activist Ashley McDermott with Sunrise Movement Asheville, Valerie Hartshorn with Indivisible Black Mountain, and Angelic Rezza Wind with Our Voice NC. Music from local band Paper Crowns will open and close the rally, along with local artists. Attendees are encouraged to bring signs and gather peacefully on the sidewalks.
