Vermont Avenue Halloween seeks volunteers and donations

Press release from Vermont Avenue Halloween:

Neighbors in West Asheville are again coming together to assemble closing of the popular neighborhood street for children and families for “Tricks and Treats” this Halloween. Vermont Avenue will be barricaded and manned by volunteers to assure safety and convenience for families and residents.  New this year is the addition of four police officers to be present and assisting in a smooth and safe family event.

Organizers are seeking online donations to offset the increased cost of hiring the police, city permits and rising costs of donating candy to the residents who welcome the 1000’s of eager children. Sunny Point Café on Haywood Rd in West Asheville is gathering candy at their location.

Volunteers are greatly needed this year to assist with the barricades, guiding cars to better parking options, communication with EMS vehicles and more. Groups and businesses are encouraged to work together on the barricade shifts, and costumes and decorations are encouraged.

This Halloween occurs on Thursday, October 31st, and all through-traffic will shut down on Vermont Avenue starting at 5:30 p.m. and will resume at 9 p.m.  Only emergency vehicles will be allowed access.

“I’m really excited to hear they’re closing the street off because in past years before the closure, I remember of all the people with cars driving down and it really felt unsafe.” said Michael Dickson, Vermont Avenue resident, regarding the highly successful undertaking by neighbors and volunteers.

“Halloween can be very overwhelming to the residents who hand out 1,000’s of pieces of candy each year. We collect candy donations at local businesses and purchase candy with what is leftover from our online fundraising. Safety is the first goal but we also want to allow the residents of Vermont Avenue to enjoy the night”, said Karen Ostergaard, Vermont resident, and event organizer.
