“What have you done to deserve such rampant freedom?” Penned as a response to the 9/11 tragedy, Sam Shepard’s The God of Hell is the latest endeavor of Ellipsis Theatre Company. Playing for three weekends, Nov. 1-17 (Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m.), at Asheville Community Theatre’s 35below, 35 E Walnut St, Asheville, NC 28801. This provocative and deceptively chilling play directed by Asheville native David Sebren focuses on a quiet, respectable couple, Emma and Frank (Karen Covington-Yow and Daniel Sandoval) who simply raise cows on their Wisconsin farm, where nothing ever happens. Their quiet life =
slowly crumbles around them when they invite an old friend, Haynes (Badi Mirheli), to stay with them. Emma quickly discovers her husband has omitted a few key details about their house guest – this old friend is on the lam from a secret government project involving plutonium. The plot takes a hellacious turn when a smooth-talking government bureaucrat (Daniel Henry) arrives to seemingly peddle cookies and Americana-style goods. His almost radioactive conformity puts the couple on the defensive, quickly altering a simple Heartland household into a patriotic torture chamber.Ellipsis Theatre Company was founded by Chelsey Gaddy Mirheli in 2016, and focuses on providing actors and directors the opportunity to
