This election season, the Emergency Circus will enliven polling places across the nation with Cirque d’Vote, a nonpartisan initiative to put the FUN back in FUNdamental rights.
On Friday, October 30, beginning at 2:00 pm, Cirque d’Vote will host a circus celebration at Pack Square Park downtown featuring comedic juggling, space fiddling, record-breaking acts of balance, and a few bizarre surprises with giant bubbles. After the show, the audience is invited to parade to the polls a few blocks away to vote.
“Laughter transcends all languages, it’s contagious, and is the best kind of therapy we all can use. Your vote matters, and if we want to see the change in the world, we need your voice and your vote to make a difference,” says Asheville Cirque d’Vote Captain Geoff Marsh. “Don’t just watch the circus; come be a part of it.” Geoff will be joined by soap bubble artist Steve Langley, troupe juggler Walter Beals, and mad fiddling soundscape painter Will Frankle. Ben and Jerry’s will also be onsite with several popular flavors of ice cream.
As a part of the nationwide Unstoppable Voter Project, Cirque d’Vote has called upon clowns, jugglers, acrobats, and aerialists all over the United States to present covid-safe circus shows and parades to excite folks about exercising their right to vote.
Since 2012, the non-profit Emergency Circus has been bringing circus joy to hospitals, refugee camps, and disaster shelters worldwide. During this Pandemic, the Emergency Circus will bring that same joy to US voters everywhere, including Asheville.
Professional circus artists will activate polling locations and ballot boxes throughout the early voting season in seven cities: Milwaukee WI, Philadelphia PA, Tucson AZ, Asheville NC, Phoenix AZ, Austin TX, and Portland OR. In addition to these activations, the Emergency Circus has initiated a nationwide call to action for circus artists to bring Cirque d’Vote entertainment to long Election Day lines to encourage people to stay the course and be counted on November 3.
“People speak a lot about the silent majority,” Says Emergency Circus co-founder Clay Mazing, “But the real silent majority are nonvoters. We’ve never had an election in the US where more than 45% of the total population has voted. We at the Emergency Circus feel compelled to utilize our talents to decrease voter apathy and help create positive change from our towns to our planet.”
