Throughout the day on January 25 Asheville Police Department detectives worked to identify the suspect responsible for the shooting on Hanover Street. This work led to the suspect being identified as Donte Derell Shine (28), of Leicester. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office provided substantial assistance to the Asheville Police Department in both locating and ultimately arresting Shine at this residence.
Shine is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center on no bond. He is charged with the following:
- Attempted first degree murder (2 counts)
- Assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and inflicting serious injury
- Assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill
- Discharging a weapon into occupied property inflicting serious bodily injury
- Discharging a weapon into occupied property (4 counts)
The shooting victim remains in critical but stable condition at Mission Hospital.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. on January 24 the Asheville Police Department (APD) received a 9-1-1 call reporting a person who had been shot in a home on Hanover Street. When officers arrived they found a 36 year old male who had been shot in the chest inside his home. The victim was transported to Mission where they are currently in critical condition.
Officers spoke with witnesses who stated that the victim was sleeping in his bed when shooting began outside of the home. The suspect fled prior to APD’s arrival. An adult and two children were also in the home sleeping when the shooting occurred. Four shell casings were located.
The Asheville Police Department has identified a person of interest in this case. The case remains under further investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division.
