Lake Logan is an AmeriCorps grantee and welcomed AmeriCorps Bayou Team 5 on January 13. AmeriCorps is the federal agency connecting individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges.
The team of nine young people, ages 18-24, will be working on restoration efforts related to Tropical Storm Fred, creation care at Lake Logan, and historical preservation of Sit ‘n’ Whittle Village at Lake Logan. They will live at Lake Logan for five weeks.
In 2021, Camp Henry at Lake Logan worked with Grace Church in the Mountains and Haywood Waterways Association to secure a $23,000 Creation Care grant through The Episcopal Church. The grant funds the planting of a native river cane break on Lake Logan property that will be designated for Cherokee artisan use, interpretive signage educating visitors of our lands Cherokee past, educational materials for camp and year-round outdoor programming, and more. The AmeriCorps team will support the work of the grant – planting, developing signage, and developing educational materials.
Team members will spend at least one day a week repairing homes and property that were damaged by Tropical Storm Fred. They will also help with the installation of a new dock to replace the dock Lake Logan lost in the storm.
Time permitting, the team will also work on preservation of historical structures at Lake Logan, in particular the Sit ‘n’ Whittle cabins that were brought to Lake Logan by Reuben Robertson and Champion Fibre from what is now the Smoky Mountains National Park in 1932.
About hosting an AmeriCorps team, Lauri SoJourner, Lake Logan’s executive director says, “We are so excited about the energy and talent this team of young people will bring to Lake Logan and to Haywood County. I have worked with AmeriCorps teams in the past, and the truly get things done in the communities where they serve.”
