Housing matters: Affordable housing & county-owned properties

Press release from Buncombe County:

Buncombe’s Board of Commissioners have prioritized pursuing affordable housing on County-owned sites, and they would like to hear from our community as the site selection process moves forward. “The County is committed to creating affordable housing and has identified multiple properties it owns that have affordable housing development potential,” says Community Development Division Manager Matt Cable.

In March 2023, following the results of an initial evaluation of multiple County-owned properties, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners prioritized three sites for the development of affordable housing: 30-80 Valley Street, 50-52 Coxe Avenue, 180 Erwin Hills Road (portion). “We want to understand the specific public interest at each site and within these neighborhoods. We hope the community will join us at these upcoming meetings to provide input, refine draft site priorities, and ultimately shape the potential projects,” says Cable.

The County has partnered with UNC School of Government’s Development Finance Initiative (DFI) to help meet the goal of working with qualified private developers to create at least 1,500 affordable rental units for low- and moderate-income households by 2030. Mark your calendars – the meetings will be facilitated by the DFI and an online survey will launch on April 12.
