ASHEVILLE – A Buncombe County teacher, experienced in sharing news with the community, will now help keep you connected to what’s happening in classrooms throughout the district.
Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson is proud to announce the appointment of Ken Ulmer as Chief Communications Officer. Ulmer has spent nearly four years as a Marketing teacher at A.C. Reynolds High School. He became a licensed educator after a 25-year career in TV and radio, including feature reporting for WLOS-TV and hosting mornings and afternoons on Mix 96.5.
“It’s rare to find someone with such extensive communications experience who has also been part of the powerful, transformative moments that happen in the classroom,” said Dr. Jackson. “Fortunately, we didn’t have to look far. Mr. Ulmer has witnessed student success on many levels, from academic, athletic, and artistic achievement. Now, he’s excited to use his skills to share stories of student success from all of our schools.”
Ulmer will lead a team of communications professionals providing important school information to BCS families, team members, neighbors, and business and industry partners.
“We want everyone in the community to continue to feel connected to Buncombe County Schools,” Ulmer shared. “We especially want to spotlight the opportunities offered to our students each day by innovative, dedicated teachers.”
The BCS Communications Team publishes news on the BCS website, Facebook, Instagram, and X, and streams monthly meetings of the Buncombe County Board of Education on YouTube. The team also works with local news reporters, and communicates bulletins such as winter weather schedule changes on the Buncombe County Schools mobile app.
Ulmer fills the position vacated by Dr. Stacia Harris, who served as Chief Communications Officer. In addition to being a Buncombe County Schools team member, Ulmer is also a parent of a BCS high school freshman and a seventh grader.
