King offers this raw food recipe for folks who want to try their hand at making a DIY feast for their dogs.
Ingredients:
- 5 pounds raw meat grinds, any kind (beef, chicken, turkey, etc.)
- Two raw eggs (without shell)
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt or kefir
- 2 cups vegetables and/or fruit (see note below), chopped or run through a food processor or blender
- 1/8 cup each green tea leaves, raw pumpkin seeds and raw flax seeds, all ground
If using meat grinds with no bones, add one teaspoon of eggshell powder (available at some health food shops or search online for easy DIY directions) per pound of meat. If using meat grinds with no organ meat, add ½ pound of ground liver.
This recipe makes about 6 pounds (or 12 cups) of food. Feed about one cup of food for every 25 pounds of dog weight, or 2%-3% of your dog’s ideal body weight.
IMPORTANT NOTE: King says it’s crucial to be sure not to include any of the following items, which can be toxic for dogs: chocolate, grapes/raisins, walnuts, onions, macadamia nuts and xylitol.
