Asheville Police urge public to avoid closed parks and flood-affected areas

Press release from Asheville Police Department:

The Asheville Police Department urges residents and visitors to avoid parks and flood-affected areas impacted by Hurricane Helene, as they remain unsafe due to significant hazards.

Flood damage across the city has left many parks and trails unsafe, with risks including damaged infrastructure, unstable ground, hidden debris, poor lighting, and the absence of public facilities. Some facilities have reopened to the public, but they may still have suffered damage and could have inadequate lighting in the evening hours.

Avoid closed parks and trails: Do not enter areas marked with closure signs or barriers.

Don’t go alone: Go with a companion to ensure safety.

Be alert near flood-damaged zones: Unstable terrain and hidden dangers may still be present.

Follow all posted warnings and instructions: Closures are in place to protect public safety.

Report hazards: Utilize the Asheville App to report dangerous conditions.

Volunteer-led efforts to clear city parks and greenways are discouraged: Planning and efforts to remediate city parks and greenways are ongoing, and only authorized personnel should conduct these operations.

The Asheville Police Department thanks the community for their patience and cooperation. Restoration efforts are ongoing to reopen these cherished spaces safely.
