If you could ask Bob Moog one question, what would it be?
As I understand it, in the early 60’s when he, Don Buchla, and others were developing electronic instruments, his decision to make them intended for a 12 tone musical interface seems pretty important in hindsight. I’d ask him to talk about the climate of the time, any controversies, and what just describe his train of thought in regards to this.
What is your favorite piece of Moog gear?
My Polymoog; It has a sound unlike any other poly synth I own. It’s beautiful.
What is your favorite album (ever) that features a Moog instrument?
I don’t know if I could pick a favorite, but the Tangerine Dream sequencer-based modular stuff is all top shelf stuff for me. There are so many MiniMoog-related fusion and funk records of the mid-70’s that I’m into that I can’t even pick one. Start at “Blow Your Head” and work your way down, I guess?
Who would win in a fight—anolog or digital?
Well digital synths might have more reliability, but in a literal sense, nothing’s shaking the concrete like the ruble of an analog synth bassline . . .
What is your craziest/most memorable Halloween night?
Probably dressing up and trick or treating when I was just a little too old to do so; 12 or 13? Half the people were like, ‘This is for kids, beat it.’ Dumb in hindsight.
Describe (in detail) your best Halloween costume.
When I was a kid, my mom made me this bird costume out of foam. It was awesome. I have a great picture of it.
What would you rather be: a zombie or a robot?
Robot for sure.
What's your favorite candy (and why)?
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were the king piece of candy when I was young, so I would probably stick with that now . . . but in dark chocolate.
Who would win in a fight: Freddy Krueger, Mike Myers, a gremlin, the Blair Witch, Freddie Mercury or you?
Well Mike Myers was the “star” of the Halloween series, which was directed and scored by Jon Carpenter, which is also one of my favorite film scores ever. So I’m going with him. Plus, it’s the most Moog-related villain on the list.
What's your favorite Halloween-related song?
Anything but “Goblin” circa Dario Argento score era.
Have you ever seen a ghost, or had any other paranormal experience?
I don’t recall seeing any ghosts, but the first time that Blueprint stayed at my old house in Philly, he said he woke up and saw a girl standing over the bed. And he’s not really an “I see ghosts” kind of guy. He was freaked out.
Who's your favorite monster (and why)?
Awww, that’s too hard. Freddie was the shit. So was Jason. If I had to pick, the “monster within” a-la The Shining. It’s probably my favorite “horror” movie of all time.
