Farewell, Vadim Bora
We at Xpress are deeply saddened by the loss of local painter, sculptor and gallery owner Vadim Bora. The artist passed away on Jan. 6, following a massive stroke in late December. He was 56 years old. A little bit about Bora, from his own website: "Unlimited in his ability to create in any media, […]
Friday night fever: Nikki Talley at Jack of the Wood
Nikki Talley is many things — a descendent of Carolina mountain musicians, according to her website, a "country, folk, sultry, goth and that hippie-chick from the South," a multi-instrumentalist and a wearer (lately) of face paint. One thing she isn't: afraid of the microphone. Talley has undeniable stage presence, which she showcased at a recent […]

Book Report: A Day of Small Things
Local author Vicki Lane returns with a suspenseful, Appalachian-based drama that draws on history, Native American traditions, folklore and familiar landscapes. It’s a completely addictive read with plenty of surprises.
Too much to do on January 15!
Even with the Abigail Washburn show at the Grey Eagle postponed (she was supposed to play Asheville on Saturday, Jan. 15, but landed a Prairie Home Companion gig instead — can’t begrudge her that!), there’s still too much to do on this particular Saturday. Unless you have super powers you’ll never fit it all in. (Still, it’s worth a try…)
Dread hats
The inventors of CaTai Caps model their creations on Wall Street.
Farewell, Vadim Bora

Promises, promises
Like the noisemakers, champagne and fireworks of New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day has its set of traditions: Eating black-eyed peas and collard greens (for luck and prosperity) and ticking off a hopeful list of resolutions. And then a week or a month later, there’s another grand tradition: Breaking all those well-intended resolutions. Well, not […]
Everything is still everything
These days, she's not Lauryn or L-Boogie, she's Ms. Hill (even if you're not nasty). And she's back — at least tentatively. After a dozen-year hiatus and a few false-start comebacks (a 2008 appearance in Switzerland called off "for personal reasons," one 2009 show ended early after she collapsed on stage and subsequent performances canceled, […]
Local author Brian Lee Knopp tops Malaprop’s bestseller list for 2010
The roster includes other local writers Ron Rash, Sara Gruen and Stephanie Perkins, as well as many authors who visited Asheville last year.

On him: a fedora and graphic scarf. On her: a furry hat (with ears) and faux-fur-trimmed coat.

SoundTrack web extra: Three Asheville-based CDs
Reviews of new music from Joshua Carpenter, America Jane and Ian Moore. Each artist puts a different spin on folk: Carpenter’s is jangly folk rock, America Jane does folk noir and Moore uses steampunk as inspiration.
Red & black
Striped socks and a bright coat on a dreary day, seen on Lexington Ave.
